PHUKET, THAILAND — A woman swimming at night at one of Thailand’s most popular island holiday destinations died after being stung by a box jellyfish.

The box jellyfish is one of the world’s most toxic animals and being stung by one can cause a painful agonizing death for its victims.

The hospital on Koh Phangang released photos of the victim, 31 year old Chayanan Surin, showing the distinctive welts and marks of a jellyfish attack to her arms and torso.

Surin was swimming with friends at around 8 pm when she was stung. She died less than 2 hours later after being rushed to hospital.

Last year in August, a 5 year old French boy also died on Koh Phangan from box jellyfish stings.

Tourists are reminded that they shouldn’t swim in the waters late at night. The Thai government and beach resorts have posted warning signs and guards on several beaches in case of additional attacks.
