The Chinese navy on Tuesday conducted a live-fire drill in the South China Sea to improve its maritime combat ability.

The exercise involved more than 100 naval vessels, dozens of aircraft, several missile launch battalions of the Second Artillery Corps, and an unknown number of information warfare troops.

Dozens of missiles and torpedoes and thousands of shells and jamming bombs were fired during the exercise.

The drill tested the navy's air defense and early warning system and improved its quick response ability.

"We used reconnaissance and counter-reconnaissance, interference and anti-interference, real-time monitoring and assessment all the way through the drill. We also explored new tactics and made breakthroughs in firing torpedoes, resisting missiles with new frigates, intercepting high-speed low target with aviation force, and intercepting supersonic anti-ship missiles with surface ships under anti-submarine circumstances," said Guo Yujun, chief of staff of the South China Sea Fleet.
